What Is Mucuna Pruriens?
According to many bodybuilders, mucuna pruriens is one of the best natural substances in terms of increasing growth hormone levels. Also known as velvet bean or cowhage, the plant grows in parts of Africa and Asia. In India, it’s been an important ayurvedic remedy for centuries.
The climbing plant produces pods that contain little seeds. These seeds are the most important and powerful part of mucuna pruriens.
Research suggests that the seeds are one of the most potent natural sources of l-dopa. L-dope is a precursor to dopamine – one of the most potent neurotransmitters. Dopamine plays a role in sleep, mood control, concentration, sexual desire and even hormone production.
Some studies also suggest that l-dopa could produce an increase in growth hormone levels.
Mucuna Pruriens And Growth Hormone: The Evidence
All of this sounds great in theory but is there any evidence proving that mucuna pruriens can be used to effectively enhance growth hormone production?
In one clinical trial, researchers worked with eight healthy patients and seven individuals suffering from Parkinson’s disease. There’s a theory that Parkinson’s disease could be caused by a dopamine deficiency. This is why a treatment with mucuna pruriens may be considered an effective option.
The volunteers had a blood sample drawn 60 to 110 minutes after taking a mucuna pruriens dose. While the extract seemed to be an efficient option for Parkinson’s disease management, it also contributed to an increase in growth hormone levels.
According to researchers, the plant extract delivered better results in terms of supplying the body with l-dopa than synthetic l-dopa.
Another clinical study involved 15 trained male volunteers. The men were given a supplement containing mucuna pruriens and Chlorophytum Borivilianum. Blood samples were drawn multiple times over the course of the next 20 to 120 minutes.
The results of the experiment were published in the Nutrition and Metabolic Insights journal.
As a result of the supplementation, the men experienced an increase in growth hormone levels. The increase was most prominent at the 60-minute mark. Growth hormone levels remained high even after 100 minutes from taking the supplement.
Mucuna pruriens can definitely be incorporated in a bodybuilding routine because of the positive impact it has on some of the anabolic hormones. In order to get results, however, it’s important to choose the right dosage.
A dosage of 500 to 1,000 milligrams per day is considered safe. The Parkinson’s disease clinical study quoted in the previous section of the article used 500 milligrams of the supplement to get an increase in both dopamine and growth hormone levels.
Anyone who hasn’t taken mucuna pruriens in the past may want to start with a smaller dose to assess tolerance. Taking 100 milligrams two to three times per day in the first few days is a good idea. If no side effects are experienced, the dosage can be increased.
When a supplement that contains mucuna pruriens and other ingredients is chosen, it would be important to follow the manufacturer’s dosage recommendations.
Taking more than one gram of mucuna pruriens per day is considered possibly unsafe and side effects may be experienced. A few of the most common side effects include profuse sweating, blood pressure changes, heart palpitations and nausea.
Some people who take larger quantities of mucuna pruriens have also experienced headaches and dizziness. The fact that it affects a neurotransmitter impacting brain function could be the reason.
