One animal study suggests how turmeric could be used to boost testosterone levels. It was presented in the Prague Medical Report in 2011.
Mice were given metronidazole – a drug that decreases testosterone levels and also affects sperm quality. The mice were split in two groups – half of them were given curcumin and the other half weren’t.
When mice were given curcumin and the drug, testosterone levels decreased to a much lesser extent than in the case of mice that were given solely metronidazole.
Researchers have also found out that turmeric enhances nitric oxide production. Nitric oxide is a substance that increases the diameter of blood vessels, allowing more blood to pass through.
As a result, more nutrients and oxygen reach the muscle tissues.
One clinical study in this niche was carried out in 2012 and published in the Nutrition Journal. Volunteers in the experiment were given either turmeric extract or a placebo for a period of four weeks.
At the end of the experiment, the volunteers that were given curcumin had an increase in their nitric oxide levels and a reduction in triglycerides – both of these being important parameters for cardiovascular health.
Dosage And Recommendations
Turmeric is a spice and as such, it’s considered safe for use by healthy individuals. Some people that eat or take a turmeric supplement may experience stomach upset as a side effect.
Doses in the range from 500 milligrams to 1.5 grams per day are considered safe. For best results, stick to the manufacturer recommendations for the specific supplement that you plan to start taking.
Keep in mind that curcumin could interact with medications that slow down blood clotting like aspirin, diclofenac, ibuprofen, heparin and warfarin.
